Accounting Firm Handing Up To $10,000 Per Person Over Data Breach That Exposed Social Security Numbers and Other Sensitive Info

A US accounting firm has agreed to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to settle a class action lawsuit filed over a data breach.
According to the settlement administrator’s portal, RINA Accountants & Advisors will set up a $400,000 settlement fund to compensate victims of the data security incident that occurred nearly four years ago. [adinserter block="1"]
The breach affected thousands of people, triggered by a cyberattack on RINA Accountants & Advisors’ computer systems on or about February 28th of 2022, exposed personally identifiable information that included Social Security Numbers.
Victims of the data breach who provide documentation proving they suffered economic loss directly related to the data breach are eligible to receive compensation of up to five figures.
“Any Settlement Class Member may submit a Claim for reimbursement for documented Economic Losses related to the Data Security Incident that have not been reimbursed by other third parties, up to an aggregated total of $10,000.00 per Settlement Class Member.”
The California-based firm denies any wrongdoing.
Settlement class members are also eligible to receive credit monitoring and identity theft protection services for a period of three years. The credit monitoring and identity theft protection service offers identity theft insurance coverage worth up to $1 million.
Settlement claims must be submitted by March 24th. People who want to object to the settlement deal must do so by the same date. The final approval hearing for the settlement will be held on May 14th.
