Comcast Paying $117,500,000 To Settle Data Breach Claims Affecting 31,700,000 Customers

Comcast is settling claims from a 2023 data breach for $117.5 million after a federal judge gave final approval to the class-action agreement.

The settlement covers up to 31.7 million potential class members and resolves allegations stemming from the intrusion, reports Insurance Journal.

Hackers exploited the Citrix Bleed vulnerability in software Comcast used for remote access between October 16 and October 19, 2023, with affected customers notified two months later. The plaintiffs alleged that Comcast did not apply Citrix’s security patch within a reasonable timeframe, while Citrix failed to properly test and oversee its NetScaler software. They argued that the companies’ actions left class members vulnerable to identity theft, fraudulent activity and the continued threat of financial harm.

Exposed data included names, contact details, dates of birth, partial Social Security numbers, and in some cases full Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers.

Class members can seek up to $10,000 each for documented losses or opt for a $50 flat payment along with free credit monitoring.

The court approved $31.7 million in attorneys’ fees representing 27% of the fund, with the agreement funded entirely by Comcast and releasing both firms from related claims.

Judge John Younge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania addressed the matter in his ruling, saying the case “is inherently complex” due to “the difficulty of proving class-wide damages” and “issues about the duty of care that a defendant owes in connection with personal information.”
