Florida Financial Firm Hit With a Lawsuit After $42,000 Mysteriously Disappears From Customer’s Account: Report

A Jacksonville woman is taking legal action against Florida-based VyStar Credit Union after suffering major losses from an impersonation scam that drained her accounts.

The proposed lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Jacksonville, Florida and covers about $42,000 in alleged losses from unauthorized account access and transactions, reports News4JAX.

Unknown persons accessed her online banking, changed her password and later posed as credit union representatives by phone to obtain her debit card via courier.

Between November 13 and November 20, 2025, fraudsters drained roughly $42,000 through internal transfers, ATM withdrawals in Broward and Palm Beach counties, and purchases at retailers including Best Buy, Target, Apple Store, and GameStop.

The suit alleges the credit union disabled security controls for marketing reasons and failed to apply fraud alerts.

The woman reported the activity on November 20, 2025, but the credit union denied her claim and allegedly failed to provide required written explanations or respond to a follow-up notice sent in June 2026 under federal EFTA and Regulation E rules.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has an open criminal investigation.

The credit union issued a statement on its fraud prevention systems without addressing the specific case.

“While VyStar does not comment on the specifics of ongoing litigation, please be aware that VyStar continuously updates and strengthens its fraud detection and prevention systems. VyStar’s fraud prevention systems include real-time text and phone alerts asking members to confirm or deny suspicious activity. When members respond to confirm fraud, accounts are locked immediately. In cases where members do not respond to alerts, financial institutions have limited ability to intervene before the member reports the activity directly.”

The woman is seeking seeks actual and statutory damages, attorneys’ fees, and treble damages.
