Florida Postal Worker and Accomplice Receive Prison Terms for Mail Theft and Bank Fraud

Federal authorities have sent a former postal employee and her accomplice to prison for stealing mailed checks and committing bank fraud over a three-year span.

Jaheed Anthony Williams, 24, received a four-year sentence and Taija Avion Smith, 25, received two years, reports Florida Politics.

Both Florida residents previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail theft, theft of a mail key, bank fraud conspiracy and multiple counts of aggravated identity theft.

Williams also pleaded guilty to 14 counts of bank fraud.

Smith worked for the U.S. Postal Service from March of 2021 through May of 2024, and prosecutors say her job gave her access to a postal key that she stole and handed to Williams.

The pair then used the key to take mail containing checks, fraudulently deposited those checks at financial institutions and split the proceeds.

Prosecutors say Smith also obtained and used other people’s online banking login credentials as part of the conspiracy.

Says U.S. Attorney John P. Heekin,

“Our citizens deserve to be able to rely upon the U.S. Postal Service to quickly, efficiently, and securely deliver the mail.”

Heekin said Smith violated the position of trust she occupied.

The Tallahassee Police Department, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the USPS Office of Inspector General investigated the case.
