A Lincoln County resident has lost nearly $70,000 after engaging with a suspicious computer pop-up advertisement that directed the person to call what turned out to be scammers impersonating bank staff.

The victim dialed the number shown in the ad and spoke with individuals who claimed the account faced immediate risk, prompting purchases of Apple and Target gift cards along with a wire transfer to supposedly safeguard the money, reports KNOP News 2.

Deputies examined receipts and documents after the report came in, then phoned the listed number only to have the call disconnected right away, confirming no legitimate bank connection existed.

Authorities emphasize that real financial institutions never demand gift cards or unusual transfers to protect accounts from threats.

Such pop-up and impersonation tactics form part of broader tech support and bank fraud schemes that the FTC tracks, with gift cards emerging as a frequent payment method in reports totaling hundreds of millions in annual losses nationwide.

Federal warnings highlight how scammers rush victims into irreversible payments like gift cards or wires, often while staying on the line to prevent second thoughts or verification calls.
