Newark Woman Pleads Guilty After Trying To Deposit Stolen $410,085 Treasury Check In Connecticut, Faces 30 Years Behind Bars

A Newark woman has pleaded guilty to bank fraud after trying to deposit a stolen U.S. Treasury check worth $410,085.48 at a Connecticut credit union.

Madisyn Pettaway, 31, entered the plea in Connecticut, says the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut.

Federal prosecutors said a Bridgeport grand jury indicted Pettaway in September of 2025 on conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, theft of government property and aggravated identity theft.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut says Pettaway used a stolen identity and a fake New Jersey driver’s license on August 27th of 2024, to open an account at Charter Oak Federal Credit Union, and then tried on September 13th of, 2024, to deposit the Treasury check. Charter Oak did not take the deposit.

Prosecutors also say she opened another Charter Oak account with a different fake identity in June of 2025. East Lyme police arrested her on July 28th of, 2025. She had a fake New York driver’s license and three debit cards tied to the name of the fraudulent identity. She was arrested on a federal complaint on August 20th of, 2025, and later released on a $100,000 bond, pending sentencing slated for December 21st.

Charter Oak Federal Credit Union is a Connecticut credit union.

Bank fraud carries up to 30 years in prison.
