Swiss Bitcoin Payment Platform Takes Servers Offline After Suspected Internal Breach
A Swiss Bitcoin (BTC) payment firm has taken its servers offline as a precaution after a malicious user likely reached internal systems and may have seen customer data.
Neuchâtel-based Swiss Bitcoin Pay, which processes on-chain and Lightning payments for merchants, shut the platform down while it investigates.
In an X post, the company says attackers may have accessed customer email addresses, Bitcoin addresses and IBANs, transaction history, and hashed passwords, and that it is not yet clear whether anything else was reached.
“A malicious user has likely gained access to Swiss Bitcoin Pay’s internal systems. As a precaution, we are temporarily shutting down our servers while we investigate and secure our infrastructure… User funds are safe, and any amounts owed to users will be fully returned.”
The firm says that any payments on its platform go straight to merchants’ wallets, and that any amounts owed will be returned in full.
It remains unclear when the service will be made available again as the firm continues to work to ensure its systems are secure.
“We do not have a reopening date yet, but we are working as quickly as possible to secure everything properly.”
Swiss Bitcoin Pay was founded in late 2022 and operates as a non-custodial Bitcoin payment processor.
