Texas State Agency Breach Exposes Driver’s Licenses and Passports of 3 Million Residents

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is notifying more than three million residents after a data breach at a third-party vendor exposed sensitive information.

The department says an unauthorized actor accessed the vendor’s systems and obtained driver’s license details, passport numbers where provided, email addresses, phone numbers and residential addresses.

“We recognize the seriousness of this issue and have identified and implemented additional security options to better protect customer information.

Many of our staff are hunters and anglers and were affected by this incident. We are committed to continuing to work with the license system vendor to implement increased safeguards to prevent future incidents.”

The agency says it acted swiftly upon detection to notify affected individuals and offer one year of free credit monitoring.

Investigations by Texas Cyber Command are underway to assess the full scope of the incident.

The department emphasized its commitment to working with the vendor on enhanced safeguards.
