UK Government Placing Cryptoassets Firms Under FCA Oversight From 2027

Oct 26, 2026 - 08:45

The UK government is placing cryptoassets firms under the Financial Conduct Authority’s regulatory framework beginning in 2027.

The regime aligns crypto with oversight for other financial products and seeks to provide legal clarity for the sector while supporting innovation and attracting investment.

Officials say the rules will help exclude problematic actors from the market and enable firms to invest and create skilled jobs.

The government describes the regime as firm and proportionate to boost consumer confidence through robust safeguards.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves MP is emphasizing the importance of the changes for the UK’s global position.

“Bringing crypto into the regulatory perimeter is a crucial step in securing the UK’s position as a world leading financial centre in the digital age…

By giving firms clear rules of the road, we are providing the certainty they need to invest, innovate and create high skilled jobs here in the UK, while giving millions strong consumer protections, and locking dodgy actors out of the UK market.”
