New Jersey Mom Calls Local Business to Defend Fired No-Show Son – ‘I Don’t Want to Teach Your Kid a Lesson’

A New Jersey small business owner is going viral after firing a no-show employee and then taking a call from the worker’s mother.

The owner said she had already given the employee a second chance after one missed shift and cut him loose when he failed to show again.

Soon after the firing, the boy’s mom allegedly called to argue that unpaid work would have been a better way to teach him a lesson.

“The mom was like the better approach would be to have him work and not pay him, so, you know, that way he could learn a lesson.”

The owner rejected the idea and said teaching a child accountability is a parent’s job, not hers.

“It’s insane how the things these kids get away with and their parents excuse it as if it’s okay, as if it’s normal, I don’t understand it. I don’t want to teach your kid a lesson. That’s not my job, it’s yours.”

She said she is willing to train staff — but only if they show up.

Commenters largely backed the firing, with several saying parents should not intervene in their children’s jobs — and noting that unpaid work can create wage liability.
